Beyond the Classroom

Included in tuition is a one-week experience for students to travel or engage in local and national experiences. This unique Upper School Interim experience gives our students experiential immersion opportunities beyond the classroom.

Ninth Grade: Dauphin Sea Lab

An extension of
Collegiate’s biology curriculum, Freshman students travel to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on Alabama’s gulf coast where they experience a week of marine biology study and class bonding. Access to beaches and coastal wetlands provides students with the ideal location for a hands-on study of marine environment and dynamic laboratory experiences on the Gulf Coast.

Tenth Grade: Local Service

Drawing on their experiences during a "Day of Caring" service, their life experiences as Louisville citizens and a guided exploration in Life Skills class of the challenges facing our local Louisville community and the organizations that address them, our Sophomore students engage in a week of local responsiveness by partnering in volunteer service with local non-profits organizations of their choice.

Eleventh Grade: National Exploration

The goal of the Junior trip is to provide students with unique perspectives of cultures, environments ad opportunities found in cities in the United States that will enable students to develop a sense of responsibility, citizenship and appreciation for a different and dynamic setting. The 2016 Junior class interim trip took place in Los Angeles, California and the 2017 Junior class interim trip will take place in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Twelfth Grade: Senior Capstone

Collegiate’s Senior Capstone Project provides Senior students with an opportunity to engage and explore a topic of personal interest. Project topic parameters are purposely flexible and projects are largely limited only by a student’s own initiative and imagination. Projects vary from original works of art such as paintings and music albums, time spent in silent meditation in a religious retreat, hiking the Appalachian Trail, the construction and programming of a robot, to the creation of a glass toaster.
