Meet the Lower School Counselor

Bridget McGuire is the Lower School Counselor and works with students and families in Junior Kindergarten through Fifth grade. She received both her Bachelors and Master degrees in Social Work from Indiana University and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Her blended work experience includes thirteen years as a School Social Worker mostly in the suburbs of Chicago and community mental health counseling with children and families through programs for at-risk children, residential settings, and school based support services. She most recently partnered with a primary care pediatric practice as a Child and Family Therapist focusing on behavioral health issues in children including ADHD, anxiety, depression and oppositional behavior.

Mrs. McGuire will build personal relationships with students across all grade levels through integrated classroom lessons developed around the four Cornerstones of Louisville Collegiate School. These monthly character lessons will focus on teaching emotional literacy skills that are pertinent and relevant to a child’s developmental stage. Some of the topics addressed within the framework of the Cornerstones include the following: friendship development, feeling identification and expression, goal setting, healthy coping techniques, empathy training, and building independence and personal responsibility towards academic achievement and social success. More frequent contact will be made through small group sessions as students reach the 4th and 5th grades to address important health and wellness topics, personal safety, stress management and transition to Middle School. Mrs. McGuire will work closely with classroom teachers and staff to provide guidance around positive behavioral management techniques and school related problem solving. She strives to provide a safe and nurturing environment through the counseling program that promotes growth for all students in social emotional competency skills. Mrs. McGuire is also available for individual counseling sessions to support children through family transitions, behavioral or developmental concerns, issues with grief and loss and other school or social problems. These meetings will be held at the request of parents, students or teachers.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact Mrs. McGuire regarding any information that could indicate the need for additional social/emotional support for their child. She will work on a consultative basis with parents when considering referrals for outside counseling support. If you have any questions about the Lower School Counseling Program or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact Mrs. McGuire by phone at 502.479.0340 or email at bmcguire@loucol.com.
